QUAN YIN

Quan Yin is the Taoist goddess of compassion. She achieved enlightenment long ago but refused to go on to total bliss until all suffering humanity could go with her. Originally depicted as a male who could take many forms, one of them female, she was gradually feminized by Taoistic and Tantric influences into a sympathetic goddess who would aid women in childbirth and sailors at sea. She fulfilled needs in Chinese religious life similar to those answered by Mother Mary in western culture. Whenever help is needed, Lady Kuan Yin can manifest her calm, loving presence. She brings comfort and inner peace, no matter what the outer circumstances.

If any is carried away by a flood, call upon her name, they will immediately reach the shallows . . . or if anyone cries who is in deadly peril by the sword, the sword will be snapped asunder. If wicked demons attach, the one who cries wil become invisible to them ..." - from the Lotus Sutra.

Below is a chant/prayer found on the anti-cancer meditation page . The chant is "She Who Hears the Sounds of the World" and is a dedication to Quan-yin - the sounds being tears and laughter.

Quan-yin is the embodiment of Compassion and Wisdom. In most of the Taoist temples of China there were rituals and prayers offered to Quan-yin so that all of the new-found healing energy and wisdom could be put to right use.

The chant is sung:

NAMU / QUAN SHIR YIN / PU / SA

Na mu / Quan / shir / yi - n / pu - u - u / . sa - a

Na mu / Quan / shir / yi - n / pu - u - u / . . sa

The words mean:
Namu =
"I bow to" or "I offer respect to" / "I join with"
Quan-shir-yin =
"She who hears the sounds of the world"
Pu Sa =
"Being of wisdom"
