Article: Cancer April 1;77 (7) "Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours: Results of a Four-drug Chemotherapy Regimen in Five Adult Patients" : this is not the most hopeful article but it is a different treatment than the one Sara is undergoing, it is just more information so do not be discouraged.
Article:"Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors: Results of a Four-Drug Chemotherapy Regimen in Five Adult Patients" by Fadi Farhat, et al.: this is a very hopeful article. One thing that we have recently found out is that DSRCT has a different disease progression in younger people than in adults. This study looks at 5 adults and shows positive remission results
BCCA: British Columbia Cancer Agency
Oncolink: Another excellent Cancer resource (at UPENN).
Blood and Marrow Transplant News Letter: - this page was excellent help in finding out information regarding stem-cell replacement therapy and has excellent resources for people trying to understand more about living with this process.
Cancer Guide: this site is quite a good general Cancer resource but it also has an exceptional piece of writting on it by Stephen Jay Gould (an influential evolutionary biologist who teaches at Harvard University). The quote related to the article is "... as far as I'm concerned, Gould's The Median Isn't the Message is the wisest, most humane thing ever written about cancer and statistics. It is the antidote both to those who say that, "the statistics don't matter," and to those who have the unfortunate habit of pronouncing death sentences on patients who face a difficult prognosis. Anyone who researches the medical literature will confront the statistics for their disease. Anyone who reads this will be armed with reason and with hope" (Steve Dunn).
Personal Stories:
Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Intra-Abdominal Tumor - Home Page (David Denault): This page was set up by David Denault who had DSRCT though sadly has died. The page was one of the first we came across and has a good description of DSRCT and a well researched bibliography and links.
Haley Hendricks: this is a page that is set up for a young girl named Haley Hendricks by her father. Haley is also fighting DSRCT - she was diagnosed in December 1996. Haley's father was very helpful in Nancy Mason's and our search for information. Please go to this site it is very brave and was our inspiration for Sara's page.
Sarah & Richard Spencer: Richard was diagnosed with DSRCT not long after Sara was and he and his wife (Sarah) have created a very good site with information about this cancer including links to slides of the blue cell staining and their own personal story.
Paul Gonzales: A young person whose mother contacted me.
Pamela Johnson: Dr. Dubious web site has much alternative health and DSRCT treatment info.
Gerry Webber: Diagnosed with DSRCT in Fall 1999 Gerry has done some excellent work himself collecting medical research abstracts and of course has the courage to share hs personal journey as well
